Government to create human rights prize

Luanda, ANGOLA, December 5 - The Angolan government intends to institutionalise soon a Human Rights National Prize with the aim of stimulating more actions in this area from the various players, informed last Tuesday in Luanda the minister of Justice and Human rights, Francisco Queiroz. ,

The authorities intend this prize to be awarded every 04 April, date in which the country commemorates Peace and National Reconciliation Day.

The prize is to have different categories of distinction, namely “Personality of the Year in Human Rights”, “Research in Human Rights”, “Community and Humanitarian Actions” and “Culture of Peace and Citizenship”.

The proposal was presented by the minister at a workshop on “Governmental strategy on human rights at medium term”.

In this context, Mr Queiroz explained, the Executive also intends to create a Human Rights Observatory, which will imply major organisational awareness and better synchronisation with the provincial human rights commissions.

The minister stressed that one of the main goals of the governmental strategy, which was analysed at the workshop, is to achieve maturity in human rights issues.

“It is up to us Angolans to gain capacity to make evaluations of the human rights situation in the country, the mistakes being made, and make judgements, condemnation and the correction, to avoid depending on  evaluations made outside (the country) by people that often do not know the reality and complexity of the local situation”, concluded the Justice minister.
