The most dangerous places in Cambridgeshire can be revealed in a new interactive map that highlights the city and town centres plagued by the highest levels of violent crime and sexual offences. Official police data shows that there was more violence in Peterborough Central last year than in any other part of our area.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary recorded a total of 1,170 violent crimes and sexual offences during 2024 in the busy town centre area. That’s the equivalent of three people being physically or sexually assaulted every day in 2024. Some crimes may still be under investigation.

Of those cases, 10 per cent (120) were detected. This means a suspect was charged with an offence, received a caution, or a local resolution was put in place.

The figures may include some crimes which were later reclassified or cancelled. After Peterborough Central, Central & West Cambridge was the next most dangerous place to visit, with 805 violent and sexual crimes in 2024, or the equivalent of two attacks each day.

Of those crimes, 16 per cent (130) were detected. Wisbech South & Peckover in Fenland was third highest with 760 crimes, of which 8 per cent were detected (59).

Violent crimes, according to police, include ones like assault with injury, common assault, harassment, offensive weapon, other violence, murder, sexual offences and wounding/GBH.

You can see how it compares to where you live using our interactive map:

Our crime map records around 1.8 million reported offences. Of those, 136,000 (8 per cent) were detected.

Figures are available for every one of more than 7,000 neighbourhoods in England and Wales apart from areas covered by Greater Manchester Police, as the force has not supplied crime data for last year. Crime figures are available for neighbourhoods of between 7,000-10,000 residents, which are designated as Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs) by the government.

The statistics do not include crimes committed at train stations as they are recorded by British Transport Police.

A Cambridgeshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: “The categories of sexual offences and violence are broad and cover a wide range of offences. For example, crimes in the latter category do not necessarily involve physical violence and crimes such as rape and serious assault remain rare.

“Nationally there has been a significant rise in reported sexual assaults in recent years and a considerable amount of work has also been done to encourage survivors of sexual offences to come forward. Reports will be taken very seriously, and we will do all we can to bring offenders before the courts.

“Tackling sexual offences and violent crime are priorities for the constabulary and we have a team of experienced and specially trained officers which investigates crimes and supports victims.

“We take all reports of crime seriously and continue to work around the clock to keep Peterborough as safe as possible. We encourage residents to report concerns to us so we can build up an intelligence picture and direct patrols accordingly.
