Lt. Colonel Philip W. Tiemann Jr.
AUGUSTA – Lt. Colonel Philip W. Tiemann Jr., AUS-Retired, of Augusta, a man of integrity, kindness, and generosity, died peacefully at his home March 27, 2025.
Philip was born in Orange, N.J. on April 26, 1925, the son of Philip W. Tiemann and Isabel Carr Tiemann. He grew up in New Jersey and Cavendish, Vt. but finished high school in Louisville, Ky. while his father was stationed at Fort Knox. Enlisting in the army in 1943 after graduation from high school, he served in the 1636th Engineer Construction Battalion in France, Germany, the Philippines, and Japan during WWII.
Upon his discharge from active duty, he entered Norwich University, Northfield, Vt., graduating in the Class of 1950 with a BS in engineering and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. That same year he married Donalda (Donna) Houston with whom he shared 64 years until her death.
With the outbreak of the Korean War, Philip served in Korea in 1951-1952 as a tank platoon leader with the 89th Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. Afterward he served in armor, guided missile, and ordnance units at bases in the United States and Germany, ending his active service at Camp Keyes, Augusta in 1966. He maintained participation in Reserve training until 1978 when he retired with over 34 years of military service to his country.
After leaving active duty, he was employed by the Maine DOT as a Right of Way agent, appraiser, and relocation assistance specialist, finishing this second career in 1985. Outside of work Phil kept busy with his six children’s sporting and other school events, and family camping trips in the US, Canada, and Western Europe. In retirement, he continued to stay active with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, going to auctions and helping Donna in her antiques business, and traveling. He was proudly involved in the Maine Korean War Veterans group for many years. Additional hobbies included genealogy, military history, firearms, minerology, bottle collecting and bird-watching. He was a voracious reader who kept up with the daily newspaper until his last days and who always had a pile of books nearby that he wanted to get to. And he loved cookies!
Philip was predeceased by his parents, his wife Donna; his sisters, Joyce and Ann, son Philip Tiemann III, and daughter Maryann. He is survived by his children, David (Maryli) of Brunswick, Julie Hopkins (Clifton) of Windsor, Sara of Edgartown, Mass., and Lisa of Portland, daughter-in-law Marie Tiemann of Essex Junction, Vt.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
His family would like to thank Maine General Hospice for their dedicated care and assistance in Philip’s final weeks.
Per Philip’s request, there will be no services. He will be interred with military honors at the Maine Veterans Cemetery later in the spring.
In lieu of flowers,
donations in his memory may be made to;
