She’s sticking to her guns.
A dog that’s spent weeks in the Alaskan wilderness hasn’t been tempted home by the cheeseburger and chicken traps laid out for her by concerned humans.
Jackie — a German shepherd-husky mix — was a stray dog placed in an overburdened Los Angeles County shelter following the wildfires.
Fortunately, Jackie was saved from potential euthanasia when she was adopted by a family in Juneau. However, it appears the call of the wild was too enticing for her to stay put in her new home.
So enticing, in fact, that Jackie has been ignoring the aforementioned delicious food animal control officers and volunteers have set out to lure her back to civilization (and safety). She’s been a dog on the lam since mid-February.
“Maybe this is what she wants, is to be free and feral like this,” said Thom Young-Bayer, one of the animal control officers involved. “It’s not a safe way for her to live.”
One major concern those in the area have is the fact that bears emerge from hibernation around this time of year, meaning Jackie has a good chance of running into one of them.
On the bright side, Young-Bayer believes that Jackie is becoming less skittish around those who are trying to bring her back home.
Mike Mazouch, animal control protection and director for Juneau Animal Rescue, said, “She is not willing to give up, and we’re not willing to give up, either.”
Jackie remains on the lose in the Alaskan wilderness as of the publishing of this report.
