The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement is requesting that the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission accept the resolution addressing racial inequities at Tuesday night's meeting. A letter from the co-founder and executive director Mokah-Jasmine Johnson also asks commissioners to commit to developing enforceable ordinances that could advance racial justice in Athens.
Commissioners requested a 60-day extension at their February 4th meeting, to develop an ordinance. Johnson is asking the Mayor and Commission to accept the resolution at their Tuesday, April 1st meeting.

Dear Athens Clarke County Mayor and Commissioner,
I hope this message finds you well.
In an effort to bring our community together and avoid delaying progress, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement respectfully requests that the Mayor and Commission accept the Resolution Addressing Racial Inequities with a continued commitment to developing strong, enforceable ordinances.
The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) believes that this resolution is a vital step forward. However, we agree it is essential that it is accompanied by a commitment to developing meaningful, enforceable ordinances that lead to real, lasting change. Without these ordinances, the resolution alone will fall short of making the necessary impact to advance racial justice in Athens.
On February 4th, the Commissioners requested a 60-day extension to develop an ordinance but have yet to fulfill that commitment, leaving our community at a standstill. Why delay a commitment to addressing racial inequities and securing continued support to tackle these pressing issues?
We understand the frustrations felt by some commissioners and community members due to past unfulfilled promises and ineffective measures. However, we must ask — whose responsibility is it to ensure these resolutions and ordinances are effective?
Racial inequities have long impacted our community, contributing to disparities in resources, economic opportunities, and fair treatment under the law. By supporting and accepting this resolution alongside a concrete plan to develop strong, enforceable ordinances, you have the opportunity to demonstrate a genuine commitment to equity, justice, and progress.
We urge you to consider the following:
- Community Impact: When combined with effective ordinances, this resolution can reflect the values and priorities of our community.
- Long-Term Change: Well-crafted ordinances can create systemic change, reducing disparities and promoting equity.
- Community Voices: Listening to those most affected by racial inequities ensures that the ordinances genuinely address the needs of our community.
On April 1, 2025, at the next Mayor and Commission meeting, we request your dedicated leadership in passing and accepting this resolution, but only with a firm commitment to developing and implementing meaningful ordinances. Together, we can build a more inclusive, equitable, and thriving Athens.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and commitment to our community's well-being.
