Convention calls for comprehensive uplift of Dalits in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: Despite 77 years of Independence, the lives of Dalits have not improved. The caste system and untouchability have marginalised the Dalit community, necessitating organised efforts to bring them into the mainstream, said Krishnappa Konchadi, a progressive thinker and writer. He was speaking at a taluk-level Dalit Awareness Convention held in Thokkottu on Sunday.
Due to the anti-people policies of the ruling classes, the country's economy is on the brink of collapse, with Dalits, the most oppressed group, being the first to suffer. Overall, the situation of Dalits in independent India is very concerning, he said. He emphasised the need for comprehensive development of the Dalit community, including rights to land, housing, health, and employment, and proper utilisation of the Dalit reservation fund.
Krishnappa Salian, a leader of the district's farmer movement, said that those religious fanatics spreading communal hatred in the name of caste and religion remain silent on caste discrimination. Communal forces that do not see Dalits as humans are exploiting them for political gain, he said.
CITU leader Sunil Kumar Bajal highlighted that the state and central govt funds reserved for the uplift of the Dalit community are being misused. "Fund allocation for Dalit welfare is being reduced year after year by both the central and state govts, which are following anti-Dalit policies," he alleged.
Dalit Rights Committee district president Krishnappa Konaje, general secretary of Krishna Tannirbavi, and leader Vishwanath Manjanadi spoke.
