President William Ruto has appointed former Lunga Lunga Member of Parliament Khatib Mwashetani as the chair of the Board of Directors of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Through a gazette notice dated Friday, March 28, Ruto tapped the former MP to lead NTSA, with Mwashetani set to be at the helm for three years.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by the National Transport and Safety Authority Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Mwashetani Khatib Abdallah to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Transport and Safety Authority, for a period of three (3) years,” the notice read.

Consequently, Mwashetani’s appointment triggered the revocation of Timothy Bosire. Bosire, who serves as the treasurer of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), had rejected the appointment, citing personal reasons.

Reacting to the appointment, Mwashetani thanked Ruto for the new job, pledging to showcase his leadership qualities at the NTSA Board.

“Greetings, I am profoundly honoured and deeply grateful for the privilege of being appointed as the Non-Executive Chairman of NTSA. I sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence the President of Kenya, Dr WSR, has bestowed in me,” Khatib stated.

“Under your visionary leadership and alongside a dedicated board, I pledge to execute my duties with the utmost integrity, dedication, and commitment to realising your vision for a greater Kenya,” he added.

Further, Ruto also appointed former Nandi Woman Representative Tecla Chebet Tum to be a member of the Technical Working Group on Gender-based Violence (GBV), including femicide.

Tum is set to join the 42-member working group appointed by Ruto in January this year that is headed by former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza.

When forming the committee, Ruto cited the increased cases of GBV and femicide that, according to the president, have continued to cause immense physical, emotional, and economic harm to individuals, families, and communities and existing gaps in prevention, response, investigations, prosecution, data management, and survivor support systems.

The committee was formed at the height of a femicide and GBV crisis in the country and was tasked with the responsibilities of assessing, reviewing, and recommending measures to strengthen the institutional, legal, and policy response to GBV and femicide in the country.

Other members appointed were Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo and crime and investigative journalist Franklin Wallah as members of the committee.

Additional members included Linah Jebii Kilimo, who served as the Member of Parliament for Marakwet East and held the position of Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Cooperative Development and Marketing, and Dr Sam Thenya, the founder of the Nairobi Women's Hospital.
