The uncanny similarities of ‘Jojo Rabbit’ and being a United States citizen

People are losing their jobs, education is on a downward spiral and eggs have become dangerous. Oh, and the campus received the best email last month!

Rewatched “Jojo Rabbit” last week, directed by Taika Waititi, and found uncanny similarities between the film (see both of the quotes above) and an email that was sent, in February, by an English professor with 39 pages attached. Count them – they are there. May want to revisit them. They are about what to expect as an American citizen.

“JoJo Rabbit” (2019) is a dark satire about one young boy’s dedication to be a Hitler youth. Jojo, Roman Griffin Davis, is excited to join the ranks so that he may defend his country from the enemy, until he meets one of them hiding in his home. As he befriends Elsa, Thomasin McKenzie, Jojo realizes the “differences” he was ordered to look for never present themselves.

The email included multiple attachments, including the fact that Universities and college campuses will now be visited by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement because they can. These chilly ones can frequent private, limited access and public areas. They will be granted access to sensitive information like medical records, private records or family history records. It does not take a history buff to connect the targeting of the U.S. immigrant population to the forced identification of Jewish people, who had to carry yellow stars to show proof of who they were.

Federal Immigration Officials will require cooperation from everyone, including the F-1 student program, the J-1 exchange visitor program and the H-1B work visa program. The university will stay a safe and supportive learning environment while following all federal and state laws. American citizens can do their part by being helpful and cooperative. Do not forget that the same basic human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and EQUAL protection under the law apply to anyone on American Soil.

Hitler, Taika Waititi, who appears throughout the film as a figment of Jojo’s imagination, reprimands Jojo when he begins to question Hitler about the Jewish people. Jojo tells Hitler that they, the Jewish people, do not seem all that different to which Hitler responds: “You call yourself a patriot? Yet, where is the evidence? The [American] soldier was born out of necessity.” As a U.S. citizen, it is your duty to ensure that everyone gets their “right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” That is what it says in the American Declaration of Independence.

University offices like Government Relations, International Students and Scholars, and UAPD will communicate with one another to monitor federal guidance. All requests will be evaluated for verification that the request is based on the law. If moved forward, the request will be dealt with in a calm and orderly manner that adheres to the law. “[America] depends on the passion of these young men. Passion and readiness to fall for the Father Land – It is up to you whether you want to be remembered or disappear without a trace.

Remember, words matter: a rousing speech can inspire change, questions can reveal preconceived notions to be false and most importantly peaceful protests are an American right. We are a democracy, and we have a voice!
