Sherri Papini, the Redding mother who faked her kidnapping in November of 2016, returned to the Shasta County Superior Court on Friday to battle her ex-husband Keith Papini for custody of their children.

REDDING, Calif. - Sherri Papini, the Shasta County woman who faked her own kidnapping in 2016, was back in court Friday for a child custody hearing with her ex-husband, Keith Papini.

During Friday’s hearing at the Shasta County Courthouse, Keith Papini's defense argued that Sherri Papini is unfit to have custody or visitation rights for their children. His defense team also claimed that she used a false psychological test in the case.

Keith Papini took the stand and was questioned about whether he had concrete evidence proving Sherri was unfit for custody or visitation. The hearing is currently on a break, with further proceedings expected later in the day.

Papini, who disappeared while jogging in Redding and later admitted to fabricating the abduction, was sentenced in 2022 to 18 months in federal prison. She was released early in 2023. Her ex-husband, Keith Papini, previously stated that he had custody of their two children.

The Papini child custody case has been continued to May 20, 2025 at 8:30 a.m.
