ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) - Elkhart County is taking steps to improve the lives of children by hosting a “State of the Child” event on Friday.

Through the Indiana Youth Institute, resources are being provided to empower, educate and equip mentors and teachers.

During the event, officials broke down some numbers to see how the well-being, education and health of kids in Indiana compare to other states.

“We’re used to kids getting report cards they bring home from school and tell how they’re doing in the classroom. Our annual Kids Count Data Book is like a report card for adults,” says Ashley Haynes, vice president of data and communications for Indiana Youth Institute. “It tells us how our kids our doing, where they are achieving, where they’re doing really well at but also where they’re struggling. And we can use that data to have conversations with to understand, and then to make changes to the well-being for all of our kids.”
