Consulate day offers vital services to Charleston's growing Hispanic community

A Charleston nonprofit is helping members of the immigrant community connect with international consulates. This weekend Charleston Hispanic Association will host their third annual International Consulate Weekend.

This year, International Consulate Day will be held at the Scottish Rite Building in West Ashely. The CFO of Charleston Hispanic Association says despite some changes due to the political climate he’s encouraging everyone to come.

“Guatemala was coming, they canceled because of the climate. We were supposed to have this event at the Exchange Park, which we've had every year they pulled out because of the climate,” Enrique Grace, CFO Charleston Hispanic Association said.

Grace said the nation's political climate should not deter community members from attending International Consulate Day. The two-day event will give community members the opportunity to get help from consulate officials for official tasks such as getting a passport, birth certificate or voting paperwork.

There's a lot of things affecting and scaring people, and you don't really need to be, you can come to this event and get the help you need,” he said.

Officials from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Ecuador are all attending. The CFO says with a growing Hispanic population, the event serves a huge need due to the limited resources in the Holy City.

“There's no consulates here in Charleston. You have to go to Atlanta, Miami, Raleigh, all different cities to get there and trying to get an appointment out of town, it's very hard. So, by bringing them all here, doing hundreds of them at a time, it makes it a real convenient for people locally in the Tri-County area,” Grace said.

Grace said Charleston has a positive relationship with immigrant populations due to the low unemployment rate and booming tourism economy so bringing consulates here is beneficial to everyone.

“Charleston has a very small unemployment rate, and there's a lot of construction, a lot of things happening in Charleston where employment is needed and immigrants bring a wealth of employment, a wealth of talent.,” he said.

The free event will also connect community members with over 40 needed resources, like food from Lowcountry Foodbank , health and wellness checks and donations from area businesses.

“I hope that people will get the help they need, the services they need, and I hope it will grow,” Grace said.

Grace said 3,000 people are already signed up for this event. The Charleston Hispanic Association is expecting nearly 5,000 to attend. International Consulate Day will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Scottish Rite Building. No appointments are needed for those seeking services from Argentina, Spain, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Ecuador. More information can be found on the Facebook event page.

Una organización sin fines de lucro de Charleston ayuda a la comunidad inmigrante a conectarse con consulados internacionales. Este fin de semana, la Asociación Hispana de Charleston celebrará su tercer Fin de Semana Anual de Consulados Internacionales.

Este año, el Día Internacional del Consulado se celebrará en el Edificio Scottish Rite en West Ashley. El director financiero de la Asociación Hispana de Charleston afirma que, a pesar de algunos cambios debido al clima político, anima a todos a asistir.

“Guatemala venía, pero lo cancelaron por el clima. Se suponía que íbamos a tener este evento en el Exchange Park, que hemos tenido todos los años, pero lo cancelaron por el clima”, dijo Enrique Grace, director financiero de la Asociación Hispana de Charleston.

Grace afirmó que el clima político del país no debería disuadir a los miembros de la comunidad de asistir al Día Internacional del Consulado. El evento de dos días les brindará la oportunidad de recibir ayuda de los funcionarios del consulado para trámites oficiales como obtener un pasaporte, un certificado de nacimiento o la documentación para votar.

Hay muchas cosas que afectan y asustan a las personas, y realmente no es necesario que lo hagan, pueden venir a este evento y obtener la ayuda que necesitan.

Asistirán funcionarios de México, Colombia, Argentina, España, República Dominicana, Brasil y Ecuador. El director financiero afirma que, con el crecimiento de la población hispana, el evento satisface una gran necesidad debido a los recursos limitados en la Ciudad Santa.

“No hay consulados aquí en Charleston. Hay que viajar a Atlanta, Miami, Raleigh, a diferentes ciudades para llegar, y conseguir una cita fuera de la ciudad es muy difícil. Por eso, al traerlos a todos aquí, atendiendo a cientos de ellos a la vez, resulta muy conveniente para la gente de la zona de los Tres Condados”, dijo Grace.

Grace añadió que Charleston tiene una relación positiva con la población inmigrante debido a la baja tasa de desempleo y al auge de la economía turística, por lo que traer consulados aquí es beneficioso para todos.

“Espero que las personas reciban la ayuda y los servicios que necesitan, y espero que esto crezca”, dijo Grace.

Grace indicó que ya hay 3000 personas inscritas para este evento. La Asociación Hispana de Charleston espera la asistencia de casi 5000. El Día Internacional del Consulado se celebrará el sábado y el domingo en el Edificio Scottish Rite.
