Nevada County Historical Society
Starting during the Gold Rush and continuing through today, Black Californians have been part and parcel of rural areas. While it is widely recognized that many Black people who migrated to California moved into booming cities, African Americans are not strangers to rural California. Rural Black residents opened schools, worked the land, and exercised vigilance about the equal rights of citizens. Over successive migrations in the 19th-and 20th-centuries, generations settled in agricultural and rural areas from as far north as Siskiyou County, here in Nevada County, to the Central Valley, to the Imperial Valley in the South. In association with the exhibition, We Are Not Strangers Here: African American Histories in Rural California, CAAM History Curator Susan D. Anderson will provide an overview of her research about California’s hidden African American past at our March 20th Speaker Night program. She will speak about contributions by Black Californians to the state’s agricultural and mining heritage, and the civic atmosphere in California during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Location is Sierra Presbyterian Church located at 175 Ridge Road, Nevada City. Admission is FREE and door opens to the public at 6:30 PM. This event lasts one hour, and free refreshments will be offered after the presentation. For more information, visit our website at NevadaCountyHistory.org; call or text Daniel Ketcham at (530) 320-5116.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a non-profit, non-political, volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. Members are all lineal descendants of those who supported the cause of independence in the Revolutionary War.
Our many projects include some of the following: We have placed historic markers throughout our community as a part of Historic Preservation. To promote education for the young people we recently donated historical books to each elementary school library in Nevada County, we sponsor the DAR Good Citizens program in the local high schools, and we offer literacy promotion through classroom involvement. The patriotism portion of our program includes many projects for veterans and active service personnel including supporting the local Veterans Stand Down. Our Wreaths Across America project has grown to be an important part of the community. It culminates in December with a beautiful ceremony and laying of the wreaths at local cemeteries.

NEVADA COUNTY SUDOKU SOCIETY
The Nevada County Sudoku Society is approaching our one year anniversary of free Sudoku classes for seniors. Originally taught to local schools students, we now concentrate on bringing this exciting puzzle to seniors. Classes are held every Monday afternoon, from 2:30 to 4:00 PM at the Madelyn Helling Library near the Rood Center in Nevada City.
These classes are optional, there are no grades or testing, and attendance is optional, depending on every senior’s daily schedule. They are geared to beginners and intermediate Sudoku solvers. We have between 15 and 20 students every week, but could handle a few more. There’s no need to pre-register; just come with a learner’s attitude and be prepared for fun and learning. These casual classes welcome everyone over 55 years old. We have many students from the beginning, a testimony to the class’s enjoyment.
Sudoku, often mistaken for math, trains the basics of logical thinking. There is no math, but numbers are used because they are recognized across our planet. Sudoku also provides a relaxing escape from our daily concerns and, when done, builds self-esteem, like self responsibility and independent thinking. Just as it’s recognized that physical exercises build and maintain our body’s health, mental exercises like Sudoku and cross word and Wordle help build our mental capacities. Use it or lose it applies to our minds as well as our physical health. If you’re over 55 and want to meet new friends and have fun while learning a practical, cheap hobby, come to our class. Almost everyone finds it worthwhile and advantageous, both cognitively and socially.

CalRTA, Nevada County — Division 51
Organized in 1929, the primary purpose of CalRTA is to protect and advocate for retired and active educator’s pensions and other retirement benefits, and to support education in our communities. We work closely with CalSTRS safeguarding the future for teachers both at the state and national legislative level to protect and improve teacher’s benefits. With more than 34,000 members in 86 local divisions, we are a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that takes positions on ballot issues but does not endorse candidates for political office at any level. Many of the 190 CalRTA Nevada County – Division 51 members are volunteers in the classroom and in the community.
Our local division gives a $500 to $1,000 scholarship each year to a prospective future teacher at California State University in Chico. $100 teacher grants are awarded in Nevada County schools each year--given to supplement the classroom budget. In 2022 we awarded 37 teacher grants.
The first full week in November is the week of the Retired Teacher--we host a breakfast reception at a local restaurant for newly retired teachers in Nevada County. In March or April we hold a Pre-Retirement Workshop for Nevada County teachers to help them plan their future. In May we provide a gift to teachers in all Nevada County schools on the Day of the Teacher.
Many Nevada County members attend a luncheon meeting held five times a year—we are currently meeting at the Madelyn Helling at the Nevada County Government Center in Nevada City and enjoy a speaker or program. These meetings are held on the second Monday in March, May, August, October and December. We ask the members attending to bring a jar or two of peanut butter. A label is attached to each jar saying it is provided by the California Retired Teachers of Nevada County—these are then given to Interfaith Ministries Food Bank to feed the homeless. We are proud to report that over the last seven years we have donated over 1,000 jars.
