Vermont hospital recognized for pediatric readiness
BERLIN, Vt. (WCAX) - High honors for a Vermont hospital recognized for taking care of kids in an emergency.
The Central Vermont Medical Center’s emergency department received the highest standard of pediatric readiness as part of a statewide children’s health improvement program. The 100-point assessment evaluates personnel qualifications, equipment availability and established protocols.
Kristen Schieman, the nurse manager at the ED, says the recognition means parents shouldn’t have to worry about their trip to the hospital.
“I think it’s going to help give some peace of mind to parents as they’re bringing their kids in knowing that we’ve had the training, we have that equipment and our staff is very much invested in taking the best care we possibly can,” Schieman said.
About 15% of visits to Central Vermont Medical Center’s ED involve patients under 18.
National researchers found that hospitals that score high on the readiness assessment showed a 76% reduction in mortality risk for pediatric patients.
