Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., told MSNBC on Monday supporters of former President Donald Trump are preparing for a civil war in case he loses the presidential election.

The congresswoman accused Trump’s base of planning how to force him back into the White House following a possible defeat by President Joe Biden.

“We know that there are people who are aligned with him, who follow him, who are already practicing what their government is going to be under Trump,” Rep. Waters said. “Not only are they planning on a civil war if they have to do that, but he’s spelling it out – how and what they’re going to do and how he’s going to get revenge, how he’s going to attack his enemies.”

Trump’s supporters have also been training to attack communities if the former president loses the election, according to the congresswoman. Rep. Waters said she will ask the Biden administration how it is preparing for a Trump loss.

“I want to know about all of those right-wing organizations that he’s connected with who are training up in the hills somewhere and targeting what communities they’re going to attack,” she said.

President Biden has insisted Trump will jeopardize democracy if he is reelected, pointing to the presumptive Republican nominee’s pledge to serve as a dictator on the first day of his second term.

“This man does not believe in the Constitution. He wants to be a dictator,” Rep. Waters said. “This is a dangerous human being, and we have to know what our country’s going to do to protect us from him.”

Trump has vowed to close the U.S. border if he is reelected, telling supporters his administration would “root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.” Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., argued alongside Rep. Waters Monday Trump’s rhetoric aligns with his past disruptions of democracy, such as when the former president encouraged rally attendees to protest the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.

“We know that Trump believes in his heart he’s got an army of MAGA, extreme, far-right folks in the Congress and across the country,” the congressman said. “He has a derangement about hurting people, hurting democracy, sending a mob in to attack the Capitol to overthrow our government, wanting to round up migrants from across the country.”

Trump was indicted in August for his alleged role in interfering with the 2020 election.
