A one-bedroom house that is just 8ft-wide went on the market for nearly £600,000 and has now been sold, the estate agency has confirmed.

Noel Lodge in Ealing, West London, is located between two late-Georgian buildings. It is believed to have been constructed in the former horse and cart entrance of Ealing Grove School, which opened in 1834.

A mansion called "Ealing Grove" had been demolished except for its stables, which were left standing within four acres of walled ground. After numerous failed attempts for support from Ealing, Lady Byron finally obtained a leasehold on the property and had the stalls taken out to be replaced by a schoolroom, workshop, and accommodation for a schoolmaster.

She opened the school to help underprivileged and orphaned children, combining academic subjects with three hours of gardening each day, and corporal punishment was not allowed. In 1896, the institution was renamed Ealing Grammar school - but it eventually closed in 1917.

In 1929 Ealing Technical Institute and School of Art and Crafts was opened on the site, later renamed as Ealing Technical Institute and School of Art from 1937. This was one of the predecessor institutions of the University of West London as we know it today.

At some point in the late 20th century, the former horse and cart entrance was turned into a property and named Noel Lodge. It included 570 sq ft of space laid out over three floors, and every single square foot cleverly maximised for optimal use.

High ceilings, underfloor heating on the ground floor and a pretty garden. It is located in a fabulous, quiet location on one of Ealing's most sought-after streets. Estate agency Leslie & Co sold the house in March 2024.

Photos shared with The Mirror show modern furniture in the tiny home, including a leather sofa in the reception area which also serves as a kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is small, but despite the tiny space available, it has everything residents need including an oven, a dishwasher, and a washing machine.

A flight of stairs connects the ground floor to the first floor of the property, which also has a modern feel thanks to its freshly decorated walls and new items of furniture. The bathroom features a built-in cupboard, a toilet, sink and a spacious shower.

The estate agency said that despite the limited space available, the house is still comfortable thanks to the "clever design" of the rooms. It added: "The combination of the prime location, charming building and lovely garden got us! The history behind it definitely makes it more interesting and memorable!"
