US Election 2020 Results Live Updates: Joe Biden has won the crucial battleground state of Michigan and Wisconsin, reclaiming a key part of the “blue wall" that slipped away from Democrats four years ago and dramatically narrowing President Donald Trump's pathway to reelection. So far, according to reports Biden has 264 electoral votes and Trump 214. The magic number of electoral votes is 270. If Biden were to win in Nevada, he would in theory have the necessary 270.

Biden's campaign manager says they will till expect to win in Nevada.

Trump says his campaign will legally challenge "all of the recent Biden-claimed states"

Outcome of US presidential election on a knife edge; counting still on in key battleground states

Weary Americans will have to wait for some more time to know the clear winner of the closely-fought election between Republican President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden, as the final outcome hinged on a few states on Thursday where a flood of mail-in ballots triggered by the coronavirus pandemic were still being counted.

The results in six states — Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arizona, Alaska and Nevada — are yet to be declared as officials counted millions of votes, some that were cast on Tuesday and many more during weeks of early voting amidst the surging pandemic.

Biden closes on victory, Trump says, 'Stop the count'

With defeat looming, Trump launched multiple legal challenges on Wednesday, announcing lawsuits in Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania and demanding a recount in Wisconsin, where Biden won by just 20,000 votes.

"STOP THE COUNT!" Trump tweeted on Thursday morning.

"ANY VOTE THAT CAME IN AFTER ELECTION DAY WILL NOT BE COUNTED!"

Trump prematurely declared victory early Wednesday and threatened to seek Supreme Court intervention to stop vote-counting but it has continued nonetheless.

Pennsylvania, Biden's birthplace, has 20 electoral votes and was considered one of the major prizes in Tuesday's election.

Georgia, with 16 electoral votes, has been a reliably Republican state but could land in the Democratic column for the first time since Bill Clinton won it in 1992.

Trump won both states in 2016 in carving out his upset victory over Hillary Clinton.

Election update: Biden at 253/264 electoral votes, Trump at 214, says US media

Democratic presidential challenger Joe Biden on Thursday edged toward the magic number of 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House, but several battleground states were still in play, as incumbent President Donald Trump cried foul over the ongoing vote count.

As it stands, there are five states still left uncalled, including major prizes such as Pennsylvania, and key small state Nevada -- meaning both Trump and Biden still have a path to victory.

US media outlets have projected wins for the Republican incumbent in 23 states including big prizes Florida and Texas, as well as Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Ohio -- all states he won in 2016.

Biden has captured 22 states including his home state Delaware and big prizes California and New York, as well as the US capital.

So far, that gives Biden 264 electoral votes (or 253 without Arizona) and Trump 214.

In Georgia, 61,000 ballots still to count

With counting continuing in numerous counties throughout Georgia, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said that as of 9:15 a.m. there were approximately 61,000 ballots outstanding.

He said election officials had planned to keep counting through this morning and are “on pace to accomplish that responsibly."

Georgia will have at least one runoff for a Senate seat in January.

Gold hits three-week peak as dollar wilts on Biden victory bets

Gold bounced to a more than three-week peak on Thursday as increasing bets of a Joe Biden victory in the close U.S. election boosted hopes for larger stimulus and dented the dollar, ahead of a Federal Reserve policy statement.

Spot gold rose 1.4% at $1,930.66 per ounce by 9:49 a.m. EST (1449 GMT), after hitting its highest since Oct. 12 at $1,932.51. U.S. gold futures gained 1.9% to $1,932.80.

Wall Street jumps at open as Blue Wave risks fade, Dow up 200 points

Wall Street jumped at the open on Thursday as investors bet on a Republican held Senate that would block any moves by a Joe Biden administration to tighten regulation and raise taxes on corporate America, even as the presidential election remained too close to call.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 235.71 points, or 0.85%, at the open to 28,083.37.

The S&P 500 opened higher by 42.30 points, or 1.23%, at 3,485.74, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 225.55 points, or 1.95%, to 11,816.33 at the opening bell.

Trump campaign files lawsuit over Georgia county ballot sorting

US President Donald Trump's reelection campaign on Wednesday said it had filed a lawsuit in Georgia to require that Chatham County separate and secure late-arriving ballots to ensure they are not counted.

The lawsuit, brought against the Chatham County Board of Elections, asked a judge to order the county to secure and account for ballots received after 7 p.m. on Election Day, according to a court document released by the campaign.

The campaign said it filed the suit after receiving information that late-arriving ballots in the county, which includes Savannah, were improperly mingled with valid ballots.

"President Trump and his team are fighting for the good of the nation to uphold the rule of law, and Georgia’s law is very clear: to legally count, mail ballots must be received by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day," deputy campaign manager Justin Clark said in a statement.

Joe Biden may have the inside track on Donald Trump to win the White House, but his party’s otherwise poor performance on Election Night sets up a gridlock presidency, with faint hopes of achieving liberal policy aspirations.

If he prevails, Biden would become the first president since George H.W. Bush to enter office without control of both the House and Senate -- promising him at least two years of stasis and gridlock.

In the immediate term, there will be little incentive for Republicans to give in on the sweeping coronavirus stimulus package Democrats hoped a big election victory could secure. But that battle would likely be the first in a string of GOP efforts to stifle a Biden administration at every turn.

Biden on brink of defeating Trump with few states left to report

Joe Biden stood on the brink of claiming the presidency from Donald Trump on Thursday, with a handful of states expecting to complete their vote counts despite Republicans opening legal fights to stop counting in at least two states.

Biden held 264 Electoral College votes out of the 270 needed to win the White House, according to the Associated Press. Trump has 214.

Biden needs only to win an additional outstanding state, such as Nevada where he is leading, or Georgia, where his campaign believes absentee votes will push him over the top.

The former vice president said he expects to prevail. “I’m not here to declare that we’ve won, but I am here to report that when the count is finished, we believe we will be the winners," he told reporters in Wilmington, Delaware.

Politicians do not decide who wins: Human Rights Watch

As the 2020 US presidential race inches close to a nail-biting finish, human rights organisation Human Rights Watch, in a statement, said the United States' electoral process needs time to tabulate the vote in the November 3 general election and cautioned that news organisations and social media companies should be vigilant in preventing their platforms from being used to disseminate inaccurate election-related information, while respecting freedom of expression.

"Millions of US voters turned out to cast their ballots in recent weeks and during a day of largely trouble-free voting," said Kenneth Roth, executive director of the Human Rights Watch. The new US President faces troubled economy

The recession has been ugly. It has wiped away more than a year of economic output and more than five years of jobs growth. The workforce is now smaller than it was a year before Trump first took office. Housing prices are on the rise, which is a great thing for U.S. homeowners but at the same time is worsening the affordability crisis for aspiring home buyers. Manufacturing activity - a key concern in the Midwestern battleground states - has rebounded, but manufacturing employment is in worse shape than employment overall. And the coronavirus is still surging across most of the United States. Nearly 6,000 people died last week, and there's growing concern that the U.S. might need to reinstate lockdowns that happened across Europe in order to get it under control.
