The 10 million Korean citizens who participated in last winter’s candlelight protests demanding the resignation of former President Park Geun-hye were awarded the 2017 Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Human Rights Award. The award, which has been presented annually since 1994 by Germany’s oldest political foundation, honors the legacy of Karl and Ida Feist, who actively supported the labor movement and various causes in pursuit of peace and freedom. They stipulated in their will that the award should go to individuals or organizations who rendered outstanding services to human rights in different parts of the world. The photo was taken during the 20th candlelight protest on March 3, 2017, which took part in Gwanghwamun Plaza in Seoul. (by Kim Bong-kyu, staff photographer)
