The 1,709 parking meters on Charleston’s peninsula have been in the process of getting updated to accept credit cards, coins, and smart card payments.

To date, more than half of the meters have been updated with new technology.

Between the new and old meters, the new meters cannot accept the same smart cards as the old meters.

For this reason, beginning Monday, the Charleston Department of Traffic and Transportation is making new $15 smart cards available for purchase.

The smart cards can be purchased at the Revenue Collections office located at 180 Lockwood Drive or at the Visitor Center located at 375 Meeting Street.

Once purchased, money can be added to the smart card to use for parking at metered spaces.

People still using the old smart cards can transfer their exiting balance to a new card at no extra cost.

A benefit of smart cards is that users are able to receive a refund of unused time from their meters back onto their smart cards.

“With each of these meter updates, the city of Charleston is working to create more convenient parking opportunities for its residents and workers. Providing additional payment options through credit cards and SmartCards is a significant step in that direction,” said Director of Traffic and Transportation Keith Benjamin
